Harris County Asks FirstNet Board for Permission to Expand Network

Urgent Communications reports that Harris County officials are asking the FirstNet board for permission to expand its LTE system to 14 sites, as it originally planned before the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) halted build-outs using Broadband Technologies Opportunity Program (BTOP) grants.

Key Points:

  • Through special temporary authority (STA) Harris County has built eight sites, and first responders in the City of Baytown are already using the LTE network for operational traffic.
  • The FirstNet board visited Harris County last week.

Food for Thought:

  • Will FirstNet grant permission to Harris County to expand? What technical implications could that have on the future nationwide build-out?
